Extra Shots » Chak De! India

  • The girls playing Mary and Nethra were football players and often played impromptu matches on set. They were so good that there would be a fight over which team would get them. Neetu Chandra, who was seen in GARAM MASALA (’05) & TRAFFIC SIGNAL (’07) was auditioned for the role of the goalie, and was even tried for the roles of Bindiya, Preety and Komal. The final cast was not informed individually, they were all told once the team was picked.

  • The girl who plays the Jharkhandi player Soimoi has such an anglicized accent, that her voice had to be dubbed. An actual player from Jharkand dubbed it. Finally, the new voice helped to shape her character well. The Punjabi girl, Balbir, is actually a Judo player. She was so impressive in her audition that director Shimit Amin decided to cast her. She went through special training in hockey, like everyone else.
  • Chitrashi Rawat, who plays Komal Chautala, is from Dehradun and has played hockey as a left striker for the Uttaranchal State Team for 7 years. When CHAK DE! INDIA (’07) was released, she was studying at St. Andrew's College in Mumbai. Sagarika Ghatge, who plays Preety Sabarwal, has played hockey in her school for 4 years. While they’re fighting on screen, off-screen, on the sets, the two were best of friends and used to hang out together the entire day.
  • It took more than 2 years to finalize the casting for this film. Out of the 16 girls that are seen as part of the hockey team in this film, 8 are real athletes, while the other 8 are actors. The roles of Bindiya, Vidya, Aliyah, Gunjan, Gul, Rani & Molly were played by real actors, while Balbir in real life does Judo. Nethra and Mary play football, and the rest, including Preety & Komal, are actual hockey players. They underwent intensive training and preparation for 6 months.
